Scentead Varnishes for Application in Offset Printing
General Remarks
Scented varnishes contain microencapsulated odoriferous substances, which are available in almost any desired nuance. The micro capsules are destroyed by touching and rubbing the varnished surfaces, so that the smell is purposefully set free.
Since interest in the different scent versions is subjected to strong fluctuations, we maintain no stock, but exclusively manufacture upon receiving purchase orders. Appropriate delivery times must therefore be taken into consideration.
We add a printed sample with each delivery of approximately 2 g/m² varnish application, so that the user can again assure himself of the scent grade and the scent intensity which can be expected before the final run. The scent effect of the finished printed product can vary from the sample shown, depending upon printing method, paper, etc.
Application Details
Scented varnishes are processed like conventional varnishes from the inking system. In order not to impair the release of the odoriferous substances, the scent varnish must be laid on as the last layer. We advise against a wet on wet processing for the same reason.
With coated papers we recommend a varnish quantity of approximately 2 g/m², and with uncoated papers up to 3 g/m².
We add spacers to our scented varnishes in order to avoid a premature destruction of the capsules during the print run. The spacers have a larger diameter than the scented capsules but are not noticeably disturbing on the printing press. Despite the spacers, it is necessary to keep the printing pressure adjustment as small as possible, and not to adjust the press rollers to each other too tightly. Additionally, the lateral friction is to be retracted to a justifiable minimum.
Also during processing a too high pressure load should be avoided in order to prevent a damage of the capsules.
Scented varnishes are only suitable to a certain extent for the IR drying process. IR dryers should therefore be set to low capacity, or should be completely switched off. If an accelerated drying process is desired, it is possible to add 2 - 3% of Grafo Dryer 531. The best scent effect is however obtained, if scented varnishes without additives are processed.
Stir well before printing.
Caution:
Due to the milky-white substance of the scented varnish, the colour shade can change when printing on a dark base. In this case we urgently recommend a pre-printing test.
