Pantone® Matching System
Low Odour
Since 1963 the PANTONE® Matching System has developed to the standard in terms of colour communication.
The colour guides are available as PANTONE® Formula Guide C for coated and PANTONE® Formula Guide U for uncoated material. Despite identical recipes in both guides, it was not observed whether the colour shades can optically be evaluated as identical.
Concerning the arrangement of colours, pure ink mixings are in the middle of the guide. Further up the shades are brightened with transparent white, further down black ink is added – therefore darkened.
The Pantone® Formula Guide ink mixing system consists of 13 basic inks, black and transparent white.
The low odour system consists of duct-fresh sheet-fed offset inks on a vegetable binding agent basis in an extremely low odour formulation. These inks dry mostly physically. They are suitable for the printing of packaging for food and tobacco products. In any case it is recommended to air the stack.
By using special raw materials with a high purity degree, optimal sensory properties are achieved. The used source material are subject to a special raw material test when entering our premises to avoid a contamination of the products.
A swelling of PP foils (polypropylene) is avoided by formulating this type of ink without mineral oil and short-chained hydrocarbon. Therefore packaging printed with these ink type are suited to be wrapped in PP foil without a swelling of the foil. These could otherwise lead to craters or waves and the loss of smooth and firm packaging, depending on case and strength.
A special quality control tests these products regarding the absence of components that cause swelling.

The GA series is an absorbing system. Absorbing components are potential migrating components. Therefore, it has to be provided that the packaging structure (e.g. barrier) meets the legal requirements (1935/2004 EC) regarding migration.

Special Handling Advice:
In order to achieve a rub resistance that is sufficient for packaging, varnishing is required – preferably inline dispersion varnishing. It is recommended to air the stack after printing.
Possible admixture of pastes, dryer or reducer have to be examined whether they influence sensory properties or lead to a swelling of PP foils.
